The Regate di Primavera in Portofino has begun and it comes with a new name - the Splendido Mare Cup.
Forty-one years after the original ‘Primavera’ races, the regatta is making a return with its significant new name in honour of the re-opening of Splendido Mare, a Belmond hotel.
“For too long great sailing has been missing in Portofino” said town mayor Matteo Viacava, “particularly for a town like ours so closely linked to the sea.”
The event will pay homage to the village’s historical regattas with a combination of sport and glamour. The regatta will host two classes – racer and cruiser-racer, with fast races around the marks for the former and coastal races for the latter.
Icons of the yachting world have been invited to the event which is taking place from May 6 to May 9, 2021.
Spectators can expect to see a fleet of impressive vessels, including Maxi IMA yachts and yachts from leading shipyards such as Nautor's Swan, Wally and Mylius.
The ‘Regate di Primavera – Splendido Mare Cup’ is a joint venture between the Italian Sailing Federation, Yacht Club Italiano and the International Maxi Association.
You can watch the event on the live stream until it finishes next week.
