Sea Spa: SALT Equilibrium at SALT of Palmar, Mauritius

13 January 2020 • Written by Lucia Ferigutti

Where is SALT Equilibrium Spa?

SALT Equilibrium Spa is located on the eastern coast of Mauritius, within the colourful walls of the SALT of Palmar resort. Surrounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and just a short hop from the African island of Madagascar, the resort offers a veritable retreat infused with the flavours of Mauritian culture and cuisine.

What's it Like?

This colourful new boutique hotel caters for eco-conscious travellers who have had enough of the luxury castaway aesthetic of most island resorts. The vibrant interior palette in cerulean, sunshine yellow and teal is complemented by contemporary, locally sourced rattan furniture and colourful ceramics.

Treatments at the SALT Equilibrium Spa use a variety of salts, from Epsom to pink Himalayan.

What Treatments Can You Have at SALT Equilibrium Spa?

The clue is in the name of the petite SALT Equilibrium Spa: all treatments are salt-based. Upon arrival you choose from a tray of potions – there’s Epsom salt to soothe, pink Himalayan to relax or black volcanic to detox. These can then be mixed with essential oils, depending on how you are felling (jet-lagged? stressed?). You are encouraged to mix the ingredients yourself, feeling their texture and breathing in the scent.

The treatment starts at a pedicure chair with a 15-minute foot bath, leg scrub and massage to relax and boost circulation. You then head upstairs to one of the tiny treatment rooms for a long-stroked, firm but soothing back and neck massage. Finish your experience in the spa’s signature salt room, where coloured lights glow through marbled Himalayan salt walls. A 15-minute doze on a lounge chair in here is supposed to fight stress, kill bacteria, clear the airways and boost your energy.

Best by Boat

The eastern side of the island can get quite windy. On a breezy day, drop anchor around Port Louis on the west coast and take a one-hour scenic drive through the sugarcane fields.
