Voyage edit: The best luxury eco-retreats

Six Senses Yao Noi, Thailand

Lying in the limpid waters of Phang Nga Bay in Thailand, like all Six Senses offerings, sustainability is in this resort’s DNA. With an on-site farm, complete with happy goats and chickens listening to swing music, the resort’s bottling plant also means it’s plastic bottle free.

Cempedak, Indonesia

With a totally barefoot vibe, this tropical retreat operates a no children and no television policy. The private island’s 20 handcrafted bamboo villas have been designed with crescent shaped roofs that capture cool breezes to replace air-conditioning.

The Brando, French Polynesia

The late Marlon Brando’s island escape (which he found while filming Mutiny on the Bounty) opened as a 35-villa carbon-neutral escape in 2014 and hit the headlines when President Obama stopped by. The island’s non-profit Tetiaroa Society has been created to protect the atoll and develop a replicable model of sustainability.

Alphonse Island, Seychelles

Situated at the heart of some of the world’s finest fishing grounds, this back-to-nature retreat operates a strict catch-and-release policy and only allows 12 rods out at a time. Half the tropical island has also been left untouched for indigenous birds and giant tortoises to roam.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, Fiji

Founded by the son of Jacques Cousteau, this hideaway on Vanua Levu boasts eco-credentials that would make the famous underwater explorer proud. A pioneer of sustainable tourism in the region, the five-star resort has a coral farm and runs a mangrove reforestation project.
