Sales record broken as Ocean Independence sells sailing yacht Hetairos

19 November 2013 • Written by Malcolm MacLean

Finally, 2013 has overtaken the 2012 superyacht sales record as Marc Haendle at Ocean Independence closes on the sale of the 42.8m sailing yacht Hetairos, making 273 sales so far this year.

Hetairos was built by the German yard Abeking & Rasmussen in 1993 to a design by Bruce King. Designed for superyacht racing and world cruising she is a classic wooden ketch with a very shallow draft of 3.2 metres allowing extensive cruising capabilities. Since her launch Hetairos has sailed approximately 300,000 miles, and she is a familiar sight at regattas around the world. With the centreboard down she has terrific racing performance.

An interior by Andrew Winch has accommodation for 10 guests in five staterooms - a master suite, two double staterooms and two twin cabins, all with en suite facilities. Under power, a single 985hp MTU diesel engine gives her a range of 2,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 10 knots. Alas, many of the skills involved in building her are now lost and she may be the last major mahogany hulled sailing yacht to be built.

Marc Haendle comments: 'I'm very proud to have completed this sale as it wasn't an easy deal.'
