Episode 46: Vripack creative directors Bart Bouwhuis and Marnix Hoekstra 

In this episode BOAT talked to the creative directors of Dutch design studio Vripack; Bart Bouwhuis and Marnix Hoekstra. Benetti’s 65.4 metre Triumph penned by Giorgio Cassetta, the Sunreef 100 and Heesen’s 57 metre Akira were all discussed, while the business story focused on flag states.

Episode 23: Adventurer Mike Horn 

In the first BOAT Briefing of 2021, the podcast hosted adventurer Mike Horn, who spoke about his long career as an intrepid explorer, as well as the ins and outs of narrowly avoiding icebergs. At the time of recording the episode, Feadship’s 55 metre Shinkai was still in-build. The team spoke about the explorer superyacht, which completed sea trials in November 2021.

Episode 34: Director Roland Emmerich 

Legendary Hollywood director Roland Emmerich graced the BOAT airwaves in this podcast. Emmerich, who owns 33 metre Maid Marian II, spilt the beans on how he just missed out on directing Titanic. As usual, the team went through all the biggest headlines of the week and picked out some of that month’s Palm Beach Boat Show’s highlights.

Episode 45: Artefact captain Aaron Clark 

The captain of Nobiskrug’s 80 metre superyacht Artefact talked to BOAT about how the vessel won three prizes at 2021’s BOAT Design & Innovation Awards. The winner of the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts – held in honour of this summer’s Euros – was crowned. To much anticipation, excitement and no little in-office controversy, Blohm+Voss’s 162 metre Eclipse (above) narrowly saw off Lürssen’s 126 metre Octopus.

Episode 43: Managing director of Damen, Rose Damen 

In this episode, BOAT talked to Damen Yachting’s managing director Rose Damen about taking a 10-year hiatus from her family business. Top news from that week included the “technical launch” of Lürssen’s 122 metre Project Jag.

Episode 33: Owner Tomas de Vargas Machuca 

Episode 33 of BOAT Briefing hosted Tomas de Vargas Machuca, who owns the 38.4 metre schooner Puritan. The sailing yacht enthusiast spoke passionately about both Puritan and his former yacht, 26-metre Orianda. The BOAT team also discussed Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup victory and the future of Colonel Gadaffi’s old Sunseeker.

Episode 27: Superyacht captain John Crupi 

The biggest point of discussion in this podcast was the developing Perini Navi bankruptcy story. At the time Sanlorenzo and Ferretti Group had teamed up to take over the struggling Italian yard. There’s also data analysis and a deep dive into just why 2020 was such a phenomenal year for boat sales. The captain of the 45 metre Dorothea III John Crupi is our guest on the podcast.

Episode 44: Boat builder Jill Hinckley

Episode 44 saw the BOAT team sit down with boat builder and professional matchmaker Jill Hinckley (above left), of the renowned Hinckley boatbuilding family in Maine. The top news of the week included the launch of Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s 51 metre refitted Masquenada, as well as Winch Design’s  222 metre “private residence superyacht”, Somnio.

Episode 25: Fraser’s chief operating officer Raphael Sauleau 

This episode hosted Fraser boss Raphael Sauleau who spoke about the state of superyachting and his route into the world of yachting. Analytical eyes were also cast upon some of the best videos to appear on the BOAT website that week, as well as some classic boats that have been rescued from the scrapheap.

Episode 35: Bio-fuel pioneer Dr. Patrick Gruber

This week saw the team tackle a range of topics; from hydrogen power for superyachts to the thrill of seeing a narwhal in the Arctic. The interviewee was Dr. Patrick Gruber, a pioneer in bio-synthetic fuels, while the top news was that Lürssen had sold a fuel cell-powered superyacht.
