Italian yard Sanlorenzo has added a flagship yacht model to its crossover range – the SX120. The first unit, which is scheduled to debut at this year's Cannes Yachting Festival, will be the first composite yacht to feature a pioneering new IPS (Inboard Performance System) developed by Volvo Penta.
First revealed at the 2024 boot Düsseldorf, the propulsion platform uses twin 1,000hp engines per pod, delivering the performance of larger engines with a smaller footprint. An innovative "Eco Mode" function will automatically adjust engine power based on real-time demand to optimise fuel consumption, reduce emissions and mechanical wear.
The SX120 has a four-deck layout said to "totally rethink" onboard space, characterised by the displacement of volumes to the bow and a spacious aft cockpit dedicated to bathing. Both exterior and interior design stem from a partnership between Italian studios Zuccon International Project and Piero Lissoni, who first began work on the range with the debut of the 26.8-metre SX88 in 2017.
One of the yacht's most distinctive features is the beach area, which houses a pop-up pool that can be covered through a lift and slide sundeck mechanism to ensure optimal sailing conditions. The space itself can extend from 40 square metres to 70 square metres, thanks to opening terraces, providing water access on all three sides.
A large, cosy lounge can be found further inside the beach area, alongside access to the lower deck with its crew area, Hammam and four guest cabins – one of which can be kept open as a lounge or closed for conversion into a cabin.
"The SX120 is a spectacular floating architecture. We took all the things the other SXs taught us and put them here," said Lissoni. "It has beaches, floors that interconnect and big openings. It's a real floating villa in the body of an absolutely extraordinary project."
A large saloon is the focus of the main deck, at the heart of which is a sculptural wooden staircase clad in steel. The dining area can be found aft of this centrepiece – accommodating up to 14 guests – while the forward part is dedicated to a master suite with direct access to the bow. Interiors are clean and contemporary, punctuated by design details such as wooden quills, steel-effect film and parquet flooring.
Other highlights of the SX120 include a skylounge that can be converted into a dining area, media room or play room, and the flybridge, which benefits from a modular system that can be "freely configured" for a more reserved, private space.
"SX120 represents the natural evolution of a range that has changed the way yachting is conceived, and redefined the experience of living on board – introducing a new idea of space, liveability and connection with the sea," added Tommaso Vincenzi, Sanlorenzo CEO.
According to BOATPro, Sanlorenzo has an impressive 62 active superyacht projects, three of which belong to its upcoming Sanlorenzo 74Steel series.
The Italian yard celebrated the delivery of its current flagship – the 40.7-metre Andiamo – earlier this year.
