4 of the best design features of the MJM 50z

Her timeless good looks

Accept no imitations

Drawing on a rich tradition of Downeast style powerboats, the 15.24 metre MJM Yachts 50z is as pleasing on the eye as she is fun to drive. Developed in collaboration with designer Doug Zurn, who has previously designed yachts for Billy Joel, the MJM 50z features many unique styling cues that make her immediately recognisable. Her majestic Carolina flare and elegant flowing lines create a unique eye-catching, patent protected signature look. Other important benefits of the 50z’s sleek profile include lower bridge clearance, greater stability for seaworthiness, faster hose down after use, less windage and easier trucking overland.

These timeless good looks were a primary goal for the design by MJM founder Bob Johnstone, 2016 National Sailing Hall of Fame inductee. His aim for the 50z was clear: to make “the most beautiful boat to enter a marina”. But of course, beauty is more than skin deep, and that is true of the 50z — her three coats of Awlcraft 2000 ensure that, unlike some gelcoat finished powerboats, she will stay looking this good as the seasons roll by.

She looks just as good on the inside

Revel in the exquisite interiors

The design team behind the MJM 50z paid just as much attention to the interior lines of the 50z, after all there’s no point in creating such an appealing exterior if the interior can’t back it up. To highlight their fine craftsmanship, MJM Yachts features a classic Herreshoff inspired design which highlights the pristine satin finish of the Cherry cabinetry, while dimmable LED lighting means you can easily create the perfect mood on board. The 50z's Great Cabin can sleep two foot-to-foot or convert into a large double bed, with a choice of a soft privacy curtain or a clever portable bulkhead system for quiet privacy.

MJM offers several layout options to fulfil the needs of even the most demanding owner. While the standard layout can comfortably sleep seven, there is an option for an additional cabin allowing her to sleep up to nine people.

The elegant forward stateroom

Designed around the owners

Although it is one of the most private areas on the boat, you’ll want to show off the refined forward stateroom on the MJM 50z. The master cabin is quiet and relaxing for overnighting and a practical daytime getaway. With two large hatches and hull ports, this space has excellent ventilation and is flooded with natural light, showing off the beautiful Cherry joinery. To port is a relaxing easy chair and dressing table that doubles as a work station next to a large hull port for great views and natural lighting. The generous island berth, the largest you can find on any yacht of this size, twin full-size hanging lockers, along with cavernous drawers and sole storage deliver a best in class live-aboard experience for weeks on end.

And it’s not just about getting a good night’s sleep either — the private en-suite compartment to port allows you to freshen up without needing to share this area with your guests, while the area to starboard is open to customisation. The large armchair and desk means you can enjoy daytime privacy to read a book in comfort, or set this area up as your floating office. And if long passages at sea are part of your plans, you can opt for an extra-deep closet for additional stowage.

Whichever option you plump for, the atmosphere in here is light and inviting, as the MJM 50z boasts 50% more hatches and portholes than any other yacht in her class, which flood the interior with natural light.

Her smooth and safe flush deck

Practical aesthetics abound

Up on the main deck of the MJM 50z there is a strong emphasis on balancing stunning good looks with practical considerations. The deck is a perfect example of this, as it sits completely flush from the cockpit right to the wheel, indeed 50% of the boat is all on the same level. The result is an area that is safe for owners moving around deck, and with the aft-deck Bimini, can also host large parties on board in any weather. Up to 18 people are allowed under ISO Category A (ocean cruising) and up to 30 under ISO Category B (offshore cruising).

You will have plenty of options for welcoming your guests, with port and starboard boarding access (a rare feature on yachts of this size) while movable cockpit side chairs mean you can set up the seating to suit the occasion. Finally, this whole area is comparable to the upper flybridge deck of a 30 metre motoryacht without the inconvenience of having to move drinks and food up and down ladders and stairs. The MJM 50z boasts the kind of timeless beauty that will keep turning heads in marinas all across the world for many years to come.
