U-Boat Worx ramps up production on NEMO submersibles

16 January 2023 • by Gabrielle Lazaridis

U-Boat Worx has announced that the first production series of its NEMO submersibles is well underway at the brand's newly-renovated manufacturing facility in the Netherlands. The submarine specialist began series production of the NEMO in September 2022 to meet increasing demand and is currently on track to deliver 15 units by the end of 2023.

Designed with the yacht market in mind, the NEMO submersible can dive to depths of 100 metres with room for two, and at 2.3 metres wide requires less storage space than a pair of Jet Skis. Meanwhile, a simple launch and recovery system allows for ease of operation thanks to a single lifting point.

There are two models in the series: a one-seater model (from €545,000) and a two-seater model (from €590,000). According to U-Boat Worx CEO Bert Houtman, the submarine is approximately 80 per cent more affordable than other market submersibles.

Both NEMOs 1 and 2 feature a depth rating of 100 metres, a spherical viewport, battery-powered electrical propulsion, rigorous safety features, air-conditioning and are DNV-certified

"We set out on a mission to introduce safe and effortless access to the underwater world to as many people as possible. With the NEMO pricing revolution, we’re now taking the next step in this journey with the aim of having 1,000 submarines in operation by 2030," Houtman said.

To aid in the company's vision, the new production line setup aims to reduce the traditional 1-2 year lead time for submersibles to where the company will be able to deliver units from stock towards the end of 2023.

The news comes eight months after U-Boat Worx added a nine-person submersible to its lineup called NEXUS. The new series features a maximum depth of 200 metres, and is being marketed as a truly immersive aquatic experience due to its fully transparent elliptical pressure hull.
