If you find yourself spending sometime ashore this summer then be sure to add the Qatar Goodwood Festival to your calendar. This iconic five-day horseracing event – previously known as Glorious Goodwood – has long been a part of the traditional British social calendar but overseas interest now means it is a truly international affair.
The highlight of the festival comes on day two with the Qatar Sussex Stakes. With prize money of £1 million it is undoubtedly one of the most significant mile races in the horseracing calendar.
Over the years, Goodwood has also become renowned for the impeccable style of its attendees and for 2016 this focus on fashion extends to the racecourse where designers including Vivienne Westwood, Amanda Wakeley and Jasmine Guinness have created special silks for the annual Magnolia Cup women’s charity race.
"The Qatar Goodwood Festival is now in its second year and has been wonderful for the racecourse,” said Lord March, owner of the Goodwood Estate. “Qatar completely understands the significance of our rich history and totally gets what Goodwood means to the English summer season.
“To be racing at Goodwood and know you are seeing the best horses competing for the highest prizes adds hugely to the excitement and atmosphere of the festival – it’s all about being in the presence of the world’s best. It’s not only a very positive thing for Goodwood but also for the sport as a whole. This support from Qatar has raised the racing game in this country."
The Qatar Goodwood Festival takes place from July 26-30, 2016, visit goodwood.com for tickets and information.
