The beautiful scenery of the Bay of Islands, which comprises more than 140 sub-tropical islands, provided the perfect backdrop to the three-day racing event.
Local fishermen weren't the only spectators to enjoy the racing. A pod of dolphins also joined in with the regatta, shadowing the bows as they navigated through the Bay of Islands.
Drama was in high supply during the fast and furious racing schedule, with close battles taking place between Adele and Kawil, light winds delaying racing and Janice of Wyoming receiving a time penalty after crossing the start line early.
The Race Course
The technicalities of the race course challenged the crews as they aimed to turn and tack with total precision in the bay. Reading the conditions well, slick crew work and strong tactical decisions helped Kawil secure first place.
Landmarks from the Bay of Islands, such as Tapeka Point and Ninepin Rock, provided the perfect racing milestones during the three-day racing event, which comprised the Orams Marine Race, Boat International Race Day and Royal Huisman Race Day.
Camaraderie and team spirit were in generous supply during the regatta, with crews on every yacht working hard to pull together and celebrating their achievements at the event's prizegiving.
Enthusiastic crowds, both local and from afar, migrated to the beautiful Bay of Islands to watch the superyacht sailing regatta take place.
After racing through the Bay of Islands, the worthy winner at the end of the competition was team Kawil. The 34.14 metre Derecktor superyacht was delivered by the US shipyard in 2000 and was a first time entrant in the 2020 New Zealand Millennium Cup. Second place was awarded to the 54.6 metre Vitters sailing yacht Adele.
From the five sailing yachts in the field, Royal Huisman yacht Sassafras and Yachting Developments' Silvertip were participating as return entrants. The 2021 edition of the New Zealand Millennium Cup regatta will likely be a larger group though, with over 40 entries already expected.
