Omikron links offshore racing success with development of 53m sailing yacht Argo 54

Greek yard Omikron Yachts has revealed how lessons learned during its winning campaign at this year's Aegean 600 are helping shape the construction of its 53.2-metre sailing yacht Argo 54, which is now entering the final stages of construction ahead of an expected launch in the second quarter of 2027.

Hot works have been completed and the yacht has been painted, while the keel box, keel systems and piping are now in place. The yard is currently fitting the mechanical and sailing systems and finishing the floors and insulation. The mast has also been delivered and is due to be stepped 60 days before sea trials next year.

The Greek shipyard describe offshore racing as a key part of the Argo 54's development, with the yard's team recently claiming victory in both the Maxi class and the Aegean Athena Trophy on board the rebuilt Volvo Open 70 AIOLOS – a yacht originally designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian for the 2012 Volvo Ocean Race. Acquired by the owner of Argo 54, the yacht was rebuilt by Omikron as a training platform for both the owner and crew ahead of the superyacht's delivery, with the owner taking the helm during races.

"The sea is our best teacher," said Omikron Yachts chairman Nikolas Dendrinos. "Our sailing experience is an essential part of the development process. The challenges and demands we encounter offshore help us create yachts that are not only technically capable, but also practical and enjoyable to live with at sea."

Currently under construction at Omikron's facilities in Lavrio, Greece, Argo 54 is being developed in-house by Dendrinos and project manager Vassilis Kouvaris. Naval architecture comes from Juan Kouyoumdjian Naval Architecture in collaboration with Rob Doyle Design, while Lorenzo Argento is responsible for the exterior styling and Mark Whiteley has penned the interiors.

The aluminium sloop has been conceived for an experienced owner looking to compete on the global regatta circuit while remaining comfortable enough for extended cruising. To achieve that balance, the yacht combines lightweight construction with a diesel-electric propulsion system featuring regenerative cruising capabilities, allowing energy to be harvested while under sail.

Dendrinos previously told BOAT International that the project demanded an entirely different approach to conventional superyacht design: "We needed a boat that was really fast," he said. "That's why we went to Juan. He's one of the best at optimising hull shapes to achieve efficiency and performance."

Rather than adapting an existing platform, Kouyoumdjian developed a new hull form designed to maximise performance while keeping displacement exceptionally low. According to Omikron, the yacht weighs almost half as much as a conventional sailing yacht of a similar length, allowing her to reach speeds of up to 30 knots under sail.

The naval architecture is centred around an innovative canting keel that replaces a conventional heavy bulb keel. When lowered, it provides more than nine metres of draft to generate the righting moment required for the yacht's powerful sail plan. Pivoted upwards, the draft is reduced to around 3.7 metres, allowing access to shallower anchorages and ports.

"We wanted to innovate outside the mainstream superyacht world while still providing the comfort and luxury owners expect," Kouyoumdjian previously explained. "The challenge was preserving the purity and pleasure of sailing on a boat of this size. She not only has to perform, but also be a pleasure to sail."

Maintaining that authentic connection between helm and rudder became another engineering priority. As steering loads increase dramatically on yachts of this scale, Omikron developed a mechatronic steering system that senses the loads acting on the rudder and transmits them back through the wheel, recreating the feedback normally associated with much smaller sailing yachts.

The layout also reflects the project's dual personality. Above deck, the entire superstructure has been dedicated to sailing operations, with heavy-load winches, twin helm positions and navigation stations arranged in a race-inspired configuration. Below, Whiteley's interior adopts a calmer, contemporary aesthetic, with Tabu timber, stitched leather detailing and generous natural light throughout the guest accommodation.

Once delivered, the owner intends to campaign Argo 54 in regattas across the Mediterranean and Caribbean, building on the experience already gained on board AIOLOS.

For Omikron, that close relationship between racing and yacht building remains central to the project.
