Dutch shipyard Steeler Yachts has unveiled a new addition to its portfolio of explorer yachts. At 26.7 metres, the Ocean Explorer 88 builds on the yard's existing Ocean Explorer platform – which comprises the Ocean Explorer 67, 72 and 85 – as the new flagship of the line and the first with a tri-deck configuration.
Despite being less than one metre longer than the Ocean Explorer 85, the new model is said to be a "substantially different yacht in terms of volume and layout". Key differences include an expanded beam of 7.5 metres and a new tri-deck configuration, which allows for a separate bridge deck, larger crew and service areas and a spa and wellness area. The additional volume has also allowed for increased storage for provisions and equipment and a "work deck" aft of the bridge for storing two tenders up to seven metres.
The Ocean Explorer 88 was designed in collaboration with Dutch designer Pim Dijksman, who opted for a round-bilged steel displacement hull and aluminium superstructure – a construction method used throughout the Ocean Explorer range – to define the new model.
The main deck comprises the principal guest living areas and a separate service galley, with a U-shaped seating area aft and independent service routes for crew. The upper deck, meanwhile, is host to a dedicated spa and wellness area behind the wheelhouse, while further upwards, on the sundeck, there is a large al fresco dining table, "sun lounge" and a bar.
Accommodation is across a four-cabin layout, including a full-beam owner's suite on the main deck and three guest cabins (one VIP and two doubles) on the lower deck. Separate quarters on the lower deck sleep a crew of four, while a dedicated captain's cabin is situated near the bridge.
According to the yard, the model's larger beam, and subsequent additional deck, has created a clearer separation between guest accommodation, crew operations, navigation and general storage, allowing for greater privacy throughout via dedicated passageways and entrances for crew and guests.
Standard propulsion is provided by twin MAN D2676 engines, with a projected autonomous range of more than 5,000 nautical miles.
"The Ocean Explorer 88 is a major step in further strengthening our position in the explorer market," said CEO of Steeler Yachts, Yorrith Joosten. "The further development of this successful line, made possible by the acquisition of our new facility in Meppel, marks an important milestone for our shipyard and opens the market to adventure-seeking owners looking for a true go-anywhere yacht built for exploration."
The shipyard announced the sale of the third unit from its 26-metre Ocean Explorer 85 series earlier this year. The yacht is already under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2027.
