ThirtyC unveils 55m superyacht concept with nuclear power solution and "duplex-style" saloon

British design studio ThirtyC has unveiled a new 55-metre superyacht concept known as ION. The studio's creative director, Rob Armstrong, shared the exclusive with BOAT International ahead of the Superyacht Design Festival, which is currently underway in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Characterised by a powerful silhouette with a striking vertical bow, ION has been conceived as a statement of "modern strength" paired with forward-thinking design. Its profile is both purposeful – designed to enhance efficiency and seakeeping – while being architectural with its contemporary lines and metallic grey appearance.

A defining element of ION is a "duplex-style" aft saloon. Designed to reimagine the relationship between interior spaces and the environment outside, the saloon is split across two levels and decorated with expansive glazing for a light-filled living space with "exceptional" openness.

Though yet to be revealed, inside, ION features contemporary materials in an "elegance that prioritises space, light and comfort". Accommodation is said to be generous, with panoramic lounges and flexible leisure areas completing the onboard experience. It is this combination of space that makes the yacht equally suited for extended private use or high-end charter.

“We approached ION as an architectural object on the water," explained Armstrong. "The vertical bow, the duplex aft saloon and the clarity of the profile all come from a desire to create presence through proportion, not excess."

Not only forward-thinking in terms of design, ION has also been conceived with the option of a Unity nuclear power solution developed by NOxFree, which enables operation without emitting greenhouse gases. The system allows for long-range cruising without the need for refuelling, while also enhancing safety and operational efficiency. The studio claims the NOxFree solution to offer "a new benchmark in clean, reliable marine power".

“The NOxFree Unity Module enables ION to operate without refuelling or emissions, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency," Lydia Moss of NOxFree added. "It’s a decisive step toward a cleaner, more autonomous future for yachts over 40 metres."
