What's In Build: Inside the construction of the first ClubSwan 80

16 March 2021

Finnish sailing shipyard Nautor's Swan announced the latest addition to its ClubSwan series of high-performance sailing yachts at the end of 2020. The ClubSwan 80 will join the line-up when it hits the water in 2022, sitting alongside its fellow racers, the ClubSwan 36 and 50 and the soon-to-splash ClubSwan 125.

What was the brief?

The brief at the base of the ClubSwan 80 project was to create a maxi yacht for real time racing: same yachts, modern, fast and fun to compete with identical features, relying on the owner’s abilities at the helm and his crew onboard. The controlled running costs, together with the exhilarating performances and lightness make this yacht a dream for every sailor.

Persico Marine is the strategic partner in the construction of the ClubSwan 80, conceived to be a very fast and high-performance boat, completely in line with her sisters ClubSwan Yachts, based on the concept of One Design. “The idea is to create a class of identical yachts so this is something very unique in the world of maxis,” explains Enrico Chieffi, Nautor Group vice president. All the boats are specifically designed to be sailing inshore racing, participating in the very traditional events of the maxi circuit and specialized in light to medium winds (VMG sailing).

What has been the most challenging part of the build so far?

Presenting all the tools and jigs to secure identical yachts.

Name one or two standout features on board?

For sure the high canting angle of the keel. A canting keel of 4.75 metre proves to be a great compromise between having a very fast, deep keel while also allowing the yacht to enter into harbours and ports without any limitation. The very long, retractable bowsprit, together with the light displacement related to the keel, makes the yacht a real monster downwind, providing an enormous amount of fun while sailing.

What is the status of the build and when is the scheduled delivery date?

We’ve just started the first phase of construction, with the lamination of the hull, through the usage of very technologically advanced robots to achieve high quality and weigh optimization. We will launch the first unit of ClubSwan 80 in Spring 2022.
