South African yard Southern Wind has revealed new details about its new SW108 Hybrid sailing yacht.

The yacht, which was first revealed last month, will be fully IMO Tier III compliant thanks to its diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system built on a combination of two generators and a battery bank and electric propulsion motor.

The system can be operated on three different modes. Silent mode for zero emissions and noise will take power from the battery bank for anchoring and manoeuvring in the harbour. The diesel-electric hybrid mode meanwhile will optimise fuel consumption and recharge the battery while underway. performance. Finally, Sailing mode – Hydrogeneration – will use propeller as a hydro generator while sailing.

Described as the “new era of smart custom sailing yachts”, the SW108 Hybrid is designed by Nauta Yachts and Farr Yacht Design with engineering penned in-house.

The yacht is based on “a versatile design platform”, according to the yard and is designed to IMO Tier III compliance. It will feature both hydropower generation and electric propulsion, with hybrid propulsion allowing zero-emission cruising in silent mode.

The yacht will also feature an extra-wide beach club aft with a garage large enough to hold a five-metre tender.

Southern Wind described the new model as “the ultimate balance between customisation, innovation, reliability, sustainability and efficiency.”
