The 65-metre sailing yacht Aquarius, built by Royal Huisman, has been named Sailing Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards, held in Venice on 1–2 May 2026. The prestigious accolade recognises the yacht’s exceptional design, engineering, craftsmanship and high-performance naval architecture.
A significant evolution of her 56-metre predecessor delivered in 2018, Aquarius was conceived to meet the changing needs of her owners, who sought a larger, more capable yacht to accommodate a growing family while enhancing onboard functionality. The result is a vessel that builds on the success of the original while pushing the boundaries of performance cruising.
Penned by Dykstra Naval Architects, Aquarius retains the defining features of her predecessor, including a classic clipper bow and elegant overhanging stern. However, this latest iteration is far more than a simple scale-up. Performance was placed firmly at the forefront of the design brief, leading to the adoption of a taller mast and expanded sail plan. While this decision precludes transit through the Panama Canal, it delivers exceptional light-air performance and enhanced speed.
The yacht’s ketch rig is a standout feature, with a 67.5-metre main mast and a 61-metre mizzen mast working in tandem with a lifting keel to optimise stability and efficiency. Together, these elements enable Aquarius to reach speeds of up to 16 knots, offering a finely balanced and highly responsive sailing experience that underscores her performance-driven credentials.
Engineering innovation is equally central to the yacht’s success. Advanced materials and cutting-edge systems have been integrated throughout, including electric steering assist from Edson, which reduces helm load while preserving precise feedback. The yacht’s increased volume — nearly 50 per cent greater than her predecessor — has enabled notable improvements in crew areas, storage capacity and onboard systems. The galley alone is 67 per cent larger, reflecting a broader emphasis on practicality and comfort. Complementing the mothership is a 10.6-metre chase boat alongside multiple tenders, enhancing the yacht’s versatility both underway and at anchor.
Interiors by Mark Whiteley bring a sense of understated sophistication, shaped by the owners’ preference for a “New England relaxed elegance” aesthetic. Hand-painted walls, satin-finished mahogany cabinetry and nickel detailing create a refined yet inviting environment. The increased length has allowed for a single-level owner’s cabin, a more spacious main saloon and improved seating arrangements throughout.
Particular attention has been paid to the owners’ deckhouse, where U-shaped seating, an integrated fridge and a pop-up television demonstrate the thoughtful, detail-oriented approach that defines the yacht as a whole.
Ultimately, Aquarius stands as a testament not only to her owners’ vision but also to the expertise of Royal Huisman and the wider project team. Her exceptional design, advanced performance and meticulous craftsmanship set a new benchmark in the sailing yacht sector, making her a deserving recipient of Sailing Yacht of the Year.
