How was your summer on the boat?

It’s still going! I’m sitting here on the back of Brigadoon looking out over the Mallorcan mountains and it is a glorious day. We’ve been on and off the boat since Easter, spending weekends aboard as well as five weeks over July and August.

Our routine is pretty fixed: we go for a long walk in the mornings and then play around in the water in the afternoon. We love bringing friends and family down to the boat, since everyone is so busy it’s hard to spend quality time with them in London. It’s been a very South African summer – we spent a lot of years there and made some great friends, who have been on the boat with us, and now all our crew are South African as well.

What is it about South African crew?
Having lived in South Africa for so long, it just feels like home. We share much of the same humour, music and food. I went to South Africa for a wedding recently and brought the crew back lots of what they love, like biltong!

You spend a lot of time in Mallorca...
We love it, and always find nice bays to anchor in without many boats. If we go to Italy or Sardinia, it always seems very crowded. The walks here are beautiful, too, and we enjoy finding new trails, often hiking for two or three hours.

Is that to balance the food and wine intake?
That’s the problem; we have such an amazing chef, it’s hard not to overindulge. All restaurants are disappointing compared to what he can prepare. And, to be fair, we get through a fair bit of wine. Our captain is ex-military and a fitness fanatic and came out the other day with some bags of sugar and told us this was how much sugar we had consumed through wine recently.

But our policy is: the best food, the best wine and the best time. We love themed nights on the boat and like to eat cuisine from all over the world. And we have a huge dressing-up box and encourage everyone to get into the spirit of the evening. We like to have fun – we’ve got a 90-year-old on board with us at the moment and he’s been out on the jet ski racing around.

What’s your guest policy?
It’s less of a policy but we find that three days is the sweet spot. Sometimes we break that rule and have people on for longer. We take great care in putting our guest groups together – you’ve got to find people who’ll mix well. But by now everyone knows each other. We had my niece’s boyfriend on board recently  who’s an expert in nanotechnology, so it was fascinating to hear what’s going on in that field.
