Rhoades Young Design

History

Superyacht design house Rhoades Young Design was born in 2001 when Dick Young decided to form his own company after a distinguished career in yacht design. He began with renowned superyacht designer Andrew Winch Designs, where he rose to the position of Creative Director before setting out on his own. Jonathan Rhoades – a qualified architect who had worked with CZWG Architects and Thomas Eriksson Architects – joined him in 2001 after a five-year spell with superyacht designer Ken Freivokh, and Rhoades became a company director and partner in 2002. Rhoades’ background in architecture, industrial, interior design and furniture design complements perfectly Young’s own experience, and the Rhoades Young design team have subsequently established a considerable reputation for interior and exterior design.

Notable yachts

With weight saving a priority, extensive research into non-yachting materials led to the creation of Baltic Yachts’ 66 metre Hetarios interior design, which fuses classic styling with extraordinary lightweight solutions. Other Rhoades Young superyachts include the Royal Huisman Kamaxitha, Vitters Sarissa, and interior and exterior design for J Class Velsheda support yacht Bystander.

Specialisations

Rhoades Young Design director Dick Young likes to explain that yacht interior designers are far more than just ‘cushion fluffers’ and a Rhoades Young Design interior design involves everything from systems runs to space planning. The result is evident in the number of luxury superyachts Rhoades Young has designed, from modern classic sailing yachts to motor yachts. Awards include a ShowBoats Design Award for the Hetairos interior design and a World Superyacht Award for Pumula.
