British studio AB Yacht Design has tapped into a growing market for supersized sportfishers with the presentation of a 60 metre concept that pairs the towering profile of a traditional sportfisher with the length and luxury amenities of a superyacht.
Named Canyon, the concept has been designed for an adventurous owner who likes to make the most of the outdoors. Its profile is defined by an inverted bow, streamlined hull and tower that sits 14 metres above sea level offering far-reaching views from the top deck with an exterior helm station below.
Canyon’s aft deck has been designed to stow a 12-metre chase tender to accompany the mothership. A twin-cradle system and retractable tender mounts vanish below deck at the touch of a button and, with the tender launched, the space transforms into a protected open-air beach club complete with a swimming pool. The space can also be used for fishing activities with a fighting chair, rod holders and a live well for fresh catches.
A secondary sun lounge is placed on the bow where an open-air cinema with a retractable TV and expansive lounging spaces, including two enormous sunpads, create the perfect ambience day or night.
While there is a clear emphasis on the outdoor amenities of the concept, the interior has not been forgotten and offers a welcome retreat from the sun. There are “no double salons or excessive lobbies,” the studio said, noting that less volume equals greater efficiency.
The contemporary and luxe decor is finished with indoor plants, wood veneers and silken stone textures that create a relaxed, neutral palette. Canyon is envisioned with the main dining area on the owner’s deck aft while the upper and bridge decks offer breathtaking vantage points.
The main saloon also boasts expansive glazing and is spacious despite Canyon's slender form. Accommodation is designed to sleep 12 guests in three double and two twin-bed cabins with Pullman berths. There is also room for 11 crew members across six cabins.
Over the years the studio has been involved in a number of projects spanning from production to fully custom projects. “We always try to invest time in the development of concepts,” Aristotelis Betsis, AB’s design director said. “Creativity comes best with freedom, and concepts enable us to create with just the necessary limits. We are a fresh studio, and we want to stay that way.”
Canyon is capable of cruising at 18 knots with the maximum speed topping at 22 knots. It will also carry a 5.15-metre WilliamJet Rescue Tender in addition to the 12-metre chase tender.
