Royal Huisman to build motor yacht Project Phi

Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman has announced that it has signed a contract to build the new motor yacht Project Phi. So far only a mysterious rendering has been revealed of the top-secret project, which hints at the unusual, curvaceous exterior styling of this 55 metre yacht.

The project name Phi relates to ”Sectio divina” or the Golden Ratio. "Phi is the formula that governs continuation of dimensions and shapes in natural proportions throughout the design," according to the builder.

Exterior design is by Cor D. Rover, interior design by Lawson Robb and naval architecture by Van Oossanen Naval Architects. Project Phi will come in just under 500GT and utilise Van Ossanen's Fast Displacement XL hull form. Phi is optimised for a maximum speed of 22 knots, and will be gyro-stabilised for added comfort.

The design for Project Phi is the result of many years of collaboration between her experienced owner and Cor D. Rover. The owner's current captain, along with Yacht Consult and Arcon Yachts, were also involved in this process.

The owner's brief put a priority on the interior spaces, designed by Lawson Robb, to seamlessly continue the principles Phi's forward-thinking design ethos.

Charlotte Robb comments, "This is an extraordinary project, an extraordinary client and team with an extraordinary vision. We are extremely excited to work with such an inspirational team in creating a truly unique home away from home and setting a new bar for yacht design."

Royal Huisman is celebrated for its sailing superyachts and, in fact, the owner sought out Royal Huisman's technical expertise in designing Phi. A major challenge of this particular project is installing machinery and technical systems within the relatively low volume, long, slender yacht while still meeting a high-performance brief – and at the same time keeping operation simple and maintenance to a minimum.

Technical Director Jaap Gelling of Royal Huisman says, “The Phi team approached Royal Huisman because the client was looking for a yard renowned for its great dedication and ability to realise this yacht with its inherent challenges, staying within the definition of Phi."

Phi will accommodate 12 guests and 11 crew. She is due to be delivered in 2021.
