As the year comes to a close, we take a look back at the most impressive and largest superyacht launched in 2013. And there were some mighty impressive yachts that came down the ways this year indeed, including the largest yacht in the world, Lürssen's Azzam, which took the top spot away from previous record-holder Eclipse. It was a big year for large launches, with many on the list below becoming the new flagships for each of their yard's.
1 Lürssen 180m Azzam
This year saw the arrival of a new reigning 'world's largest yacht' in the launch of Lürssen's 180m superyacht Azzam. Her exterior designer, Nauta Yachts' Mario Pedol, told Boat International that speed influenced Azzam's streamlined design – the massive yacht is capable of impressive speeds, topping out at 30+ knots in sea trials.
2 Feadship 99m Madame Gu
Feadship's new flagship – and the largest yacht to launch in The Netherlands to date – is a highly private and highly customised vessel. Her detailed interior design is by Andrew Winch Designs, who is also responsible for her exterior, while her naval architecture is by De Voogt.
3 Oceanco 91.5m PA164
The aluminium and steel PA 164, also known as hull Y709, by Oceanco is the first superyacht launched by The Netherlands-based superyacht builder that has been built to Passenger Yacht Code. She features yacht features an exterior designed by Oceanco’s in-house team with naval architecture by Azure Naval Architects and interior design by Andrew Winch Designs.
4 Lürssen 85.1m Solandge
Another big launch in 2013 from Lürssen is the sister ship to Ace, 85.1m superyacht Solandge, formerly Project Niki. Exterior design is by Espen Øino with interiors by Aileen Rodriguez. She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and features a dedicated owner’s deck.
5 Abeking & Rasmussen 82.3m Secret
Launched in spring 2013, Secret is designed by Sam Sorgiovanni with an interior by Jim Harris, who is the longtime designer for her owners. Harris was also responsible for the interior of the 61.2m Feadship named Secret (now renamed Majestic). Secret is the new flagship of the German yard.
6 Blohm+Voss 82m Graceful
The build and launch of Graceful was an interesting story this year, with Boat International being the first to report on it back in 2012. The original hull built by Sevmash in Russia was transferred to Blohm+Voss for completion. H2 Yacht Design was responsible for exterior and interior styling, and fit out took place over 18 months with close cooperation between Blohm+Voss, her owner and project manager Dörries Maritime Services.
7 CRN 80m Chopi Chopi
CRN also launched its new flagship in 2013 with 80m Chopi Chopi, and Boat International was live on the scene as she splashed in Ancona, Italy. Studio Laura Sessa was responsible for the yacht’s interior design and furnishings, and Studio Zuccon International Project penned the exterior lines and interior layout of the superyacht.
8 Perini Navi Picchiotti 73m Grace E
Perini Navi Group's Picchiotti Shipyard celebrated the launch of its third and largest Vitruvius series yacht in the 73m Grace E. Like her sisters, 50m Exuma and 55m Galileo G, she is a collaboration between Vitruvius Ltd, Philippe Briand and the Perini Navi Group. Grace E's interior is by Remi Tessier.
9 Nobiskrug 73m Odessa II
Launched by Nobiskrug in April 2013, Odessa II boasts exterior design by Focus Yacht Design and an interior by H2 Yacht Design, which is described as New Hampton style. She accommodates 12 guests in six cabins.
10 Dunya 72.5m Axioma
An exciting sale at the Monaco Yacht Show, Dunya Yachts' 72.5m superyacht 2013 launch Red Square was re-named Axioma when delivered to her new owners. Axioma has interesting design features, such as a double-height main saloon and a main deck infinity swimming pool.
